Increased strength and durability
When alkali reacts with certain aggregates it causes ASR, an expansion phenomenon that forms an expansive gel that causes crack and durability issues. This is commonly called “concrete cancer”. Since it takes exposure to water to keep the reaction going, ASR typically occurs in weather-exposed environments. When glass is processed to a powder meeting the ASTM C1866 standard for Accelerated Strength Activity, glass is no longer a reactive aggregate. After extensive testing, it has been determined that glass pozzolan is more effective than traditional pozzolan in mitigating ASR creating a stronger concrete.
Decrease Greenhouse gasses
Concrete is one of the largest contributors of CO2 emissions in the building industry. For every ton of concrete created, a ton of CO2 is released. The concrete industry has stated that they want to be “carbon-neutral” by 2050. They have set the objective of reducing its current emissions an additional 25% by 2030. The use of glass pozzolan significantly reduces the amount of CO2 released and would make this a feasible goal.
